Non-resistance – why we need it and 10 great ways to practice it

Non-resistance is the key to the greatest power in the universe.

Non-resistance is not about being passive, dormant to others, or not taking responsibility.

It is about understanding the natural flow of the universe and riding it.

There is no resistance in nature.

There is only resistance in man.

And the more we resist, the more stressed we become. Our life becomes challenging.

There are many things outside of our control. The only thing that we can control is our reaction.

Non-resistance means accepting life.

We accept. We do not judge.

It is about gathering information, then choosing what can work the best, and moving in that direction.

In this article, you will find how non-resistance can improve your life and some examples to understand it better. Then you can learn nine helpful ways to exercise non-resistance.

How can non-resistance improve our lives?

It is essential to know that everything you have, you created yourself. 

By resisting the bad, you actually attract it.

When you resist, you put an equal amount of energy on the opposite side.

The more you push, the more it pushes back.

Let put this to an some examples. Let’s say:

  • I don’t want to lose money. What I am subconsciously thinking is – lose money.
  • I want to have money so much (like 100%), but I resist not having it. The resistance creates fear in my subconscious, which is also 100%. So I am left with 0%.
  • The best way to do it. Is to Accept my current situation about money. I don’t resist what happens with money, don’t get sad. Observing my situation, I make choices to have more money. I am grateful for what I have now and feel good. (Here are no negative feelings)

With non-resistance, you let things happen naturally. 

It is getting in to your very natural states and blending with them.

Life becomes not about doing, but about being

The state of being is your natural state.

In the state of being you hold clear judgment, intuition, trust, and motivation.

You remove anxiety, fear, and stress. All that is left is a clean canvas with the best colors to paint it with.

By not resisting, you let the universe flow and paint the canvas through you.

Rather than fighting against the flow, you only respond to the good or bad.

Then you gently influence what your canvas is becoming by your present actions.

The best influence is always Love. And Love is our natural state.

Fear is resistance to Love.

Here are some examples of non-resistance:

  • You cannot control the weather. If it rains, go inside or get a raincoat.
  • You cannot control climate change. But you can start with yourself. Know the cause and effect of personal actions. Then choose the right thing which could become an example.
  • You cannot control what other people think. What other people think is their personal experience only. It doesn’t concern you even if they judge you. You create who you are.
  • You have a flat tire. Don’t resist it thinking it is bad. Maybe this event saved you from an accident down the road.

Accept everything as a necesity to learn and recreate our reality.

And remember, some circumstances come as gifts in disguise.

If something unfortunate happens, learn from it and move on. See what thoughts might have created it.

The less you resist, the more natural it becomes.

1. The phylosophy of Wu Wei

Water has non-resistance, yet is so powerful

Nothing is softer or more flexible than water, yet nothing can resist it.

Lao Tsu

One of Taoism’s most important concepts is Wu Wei, which is sometimes translated as non-doing or non-action.

A better way to think of it, however, is as a paradoxical Action of non-action.

It is about cultivation of a state of being when our actions are effortlessly in alignent with the cycles of the natural world. 

Wu Wei is when without even trying— you are able to respond perfectly to whatever situations arise.

It is also closely connected to the cycles of nature. Like I mentioned before – nature has no resistance. Everything flows as it should, and everything is in its perfect place, harmony.

Other well known eastern philosophy that practice non-resistance is Zen Buddhism.

It is when you have a mind with no mind. You clear your thoughts your attachment and let life flow, not resisting it.

Whatever happens, happens.

2. Notice your words

Your words, create your reality.

You can always trace a person’s circumstances to the way they talk and to what they listen.

Notice how successful people always talk confidently and choose their words.

How different they are from people talk bad about themselves and always have doubt?

Instead of saying I won’t, can’t, don’t not, focus on I am, I deserve, Yes, I can.

Here is an example:

I don’t want to get sick. – This statement is clear resistance. The actual message we send here is only – get sick. Our subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between YES or NO. There is only the statement.

The right way to do it:

I am healthy. – Can you see the non-resistance in this? It is a powerful and clear statement. 

3. Stay humble

Unfortunately, humility is becoming rare in the modern world. Humans always have to prove themselves.

This is how we were raised in school. This is how we act in the work environment.

The problem is all this race makes our Ego catch up fast.

When we do not feed our Ego we feel bad. Therefore Ego creates resitance.

It becomes more challenging when we are doing very well. But this is when we need it the most.

Staying humble – means accepting where you are. You don’t want anything more or anything less.

And especially you do not have to prove anything.

You simply do your best and don’t resist any outcome.

It is merely accepting your circumstances as they are.

Humility is a perfect way to practice non-resistance.

4. Breathe

Breathing is the most powerful tool that you have in you.

It is the quickest way to come back to yourself.

It is the fastest way to release anything as well.

Depp breathing will help you:

  • relax
  • reduce stress
  • harmonize your brain
  • think more clearly
  • focus

When you get into an unpleasant situation, you can get stressed fast.

Stress can create resistance to the situation, which might make it worse.

You don’t think straight, or even worse – think of the worst.

But if you take a second and remember to breathe deeply, it will change everything.

You relax and find the best possible approach to the situation.

5. Let go

Letting go is an essential practice.

It relates deeply to non-resistance.

If we did not resist anything, we even wouldn’t have anything to let go of.

Letting go means being willing to allow life to carry you to a new place without looking back.

In reverse holding on to something means resistance.

If we do get attached to some outcome, letting go will help us get to square one.

We can let go of anything from emotions, people, memories, expectaions or material things.

Of course, sometimes it is good to fight and try harder for what you love just a little longe. But we have to be careful, to not resist any outcome.

Holding on to the past is a conscious decision, just like letting go and moving forward is a conscious decision.

6. Be present

Every moment is a present.

I believe the happiest people are those who can stay present.

In reality, there isn’t even past or future – there is only now.

You can only control and see the now.

And when you get into the now, you see that you need nothing else.

Being present by itself creates non-resistance.

There is no outcome yet, and there are no expectations for the future. There is only what is in front of you.

At this moment ou are alive, breathing, feeling.

But most importantly, you have control of the now. Choose your present action and create what you desire.

Take the experience of the past, act in the now, and shape the future.

7. Meditate

As you noticed in my blog, I recommend meditation for almost everything.

I believe that meditation can help with every aspect of our lives.

Non-resistance is not an expectation. The two go hand in hand.

In meditation, you don’t resist anything. When the thoughts come, you simply notice them and release them.

When discomfort comes, you don’t fight it but simply shift yourself to comfort.

And in the deeper stages of meditation, you find complete surrender and non-resistane.

Your mind becomes a continuous stream of bliss.

Practicing non-resistance in meditation makes it more natural in life. Life becomes flow, where we accept anything that happens, then release it.

8. Trust

Trust and faith removes all the resistance. It is the highest form of acceptance.

Trust is the foundation of a healthy spirituality.

It becomes about believing that everything that happens to us, or not, is for our greater good.

It can mean anything: trusting in timing, circumstances, people, yourself, God’s plan.

With trust, we believe that life has meaning in darkness or light.

It helps us to live life more gracefully and hopefully.

Without trust, no amount of techniques, disciplines, retreats or spiritual directors, or any other kind of effort will result in on-going growth.

9. No expectations

What hurts us is only our own expectations.

We have expectations for results, for how other people will behave, for how our life will be, or that we will be healthy and rich.

In reality, nothing is guaranteed

When those expectations don’t come true, we get hurt.

On the other hand, when we do not have expectations, we accept everything as it is.

It is almost impossible to get hurt.

Having no expectations can help:

  • Take full responsibility for your life
  • Separate your wants from what should happen
  • Avoid negative feelings like anger or disappointment
  • Live in the present

It also can help us become non-resistant.

10. No attachments

No attachments closely connected to letting go.

In fact – if we have no attachments, you might not even have anything to let go of.

Having no attachments is about understanding that nothing in this world belongs to you.

It can be anything from material things to even people.

Some would say that even your body is borrowed for this life.

When you are not attached to anything, you do not resist at all.

We accept that we can lose anything at any given moment.

Knowing this nohing can hurt easy.

Eventually, it brings us to the most natural state of flow for us. Instead of doing, we become being.
